Plastic flexible packaging is ubiquitous in our daily lives, from food preservation to express delivery. However, with the increasing severity of plastic pollution, the recycling of plastic flexible packaging has become a focus of social attention.
- Low recycling rate: In 2022, the scrap volume of plastic flexible packaging in China will be about 15 million tons, but the recycling rate is only 8.7. This is mainly because the materials of plastic flexible packaging are complex and diverse, mostly composite materials, which are difficult to separate and recycle.
- Difficulty in recycling: The thinness and easy contamination of plastic flexible packaging increase the difficulty of recycling. In addition, China's current plastic flexible packaging recycling system is still imperfect, lacking an effective recycling network and classified collection system, resulting in a large number of discarded plastic flexible packaging unable to enter formal recycling channels.
- Limited recycling technology: The recycling technology of plastic flexible packaging is relatively backward and it is difficult to meet the market demand for high-quality recycled plastics. In addition, the quality and performance of recycled plastics are difficult to match those of virgin plastics.
However, with the development of the industry, flexible packaging recycling has ushered in new opportunities:
- Technological innovation: New plastic recycling technologies are constantly emerging, such as breakthroughs in chemical recycling technology, which can process almost all waste plastics, decompose them and reprocess them to synthesize virgin plastics. Domestic related projects have made significant progress. Huicheng Environmental Protection's 200,000 tons/year mixed waste plastic resource comprehensive utilization project has entered the production preparation stage; Kemao Chemical Recycling Technology has developed into the "light hydrocarbon maximization" technology after five generations of technology accumulation ...
- Policy support: The government has successively issued many policies to promote the development of the plastic recycling industry. For example, the "Opinions on Accelerating the Construction of a Waste Recycling System" issued by the State Council in 2024 proposed to strengthen the efficient use of renewable resources and encourage the reasonable extension of the industrial chain of deep processing of renewable resources such as waste plastics.
